The Spot
The other day I wrote about the Cave of Kelpius, the strange place in the woods of the Wissahickon where 300 years ago a group of mystics once lived.
Today, I bring you a photoessay of a place called for lack of a better name, “the spot.” Like the Kelpius Cave, the spot is a place in the woods of the Wissahickon Valley where musicians and mystics meet. The spot is 2 years old. It’s survived summer storms, a hurricane, snow, ice and fallen trees. It’s nestled in an invisible place between the ridge and a small creek. It’s still under construction and its location is secret. If you’re real nice though… I might show you where it is…
I know of it, because the spot is the work of 2 friends of mine. I went there yesterday afternoon to sit in one of the stone seats (picture 4) and stare into space. Among other things, I saw an owl.
Photo key:
Picture 1: This shot was taken while standing in the middle of the creek and is made up of 4 seperate images. Excuse the choppy cropping, but my lens wasn’t wide enough to shoot the entire thing in a single frame. The spot is a series of terraces carved into the side of the creek ridge below a small trail.
Picture 2: The lower terrace. These floors are as flat as a sidewalk.
Picture 3: Stairwells lead to the upper-levels.
Picture 4: One of the seats built into the structure. Second Level.
Picture 5: The view from that seat.
Picture 6: The wall of the upper terrace. The creek sits at least 20 feet from the fourth level.
Picture 7: View of the lower terraces from the upper level.
Picture 8: The floor of the upper terrace, looking down.
