hung

So I just went and made the mistake of watching the Saddam hanging video. It looks like they did it in the hallway behind the stock area of an auto parts store. As is tradition in state sponsored and/or terrorist snuff videos, there were ski masks over the faces of the executioners.

I found out Saddam Hussein was dead from the clerk at City Lights bookstore in San Francisco. I bring this personal ante-dote up only because I can. It’s sort of like saying I was eating scones with Noam Chomsky on the morning of 9-11.

As amazing as it is, Saddam’s death doesn’t seem to have stabilized the Iraqi “State.” Somehow, against all odds, unfriendly non-crunchy style anarchy is still on the march.

Being the huge Bill O’Reilly fan that I am, I was confused when the staff and patrons at City Lights didn’t appear to be visually distressed by the news. No tears, no anger, no lighting of candles under a little Saddam altar in the window. If anything, people were deflated and resigned. They wondered what his death really mattered and even if it might have been unwise to execute him in the middle of a civil war. Who knows? I mean at this point how much worse could it really get?
