Vertical Farming
Imagine a skyline of farms:

To learn more about this and other urban farm solutions, go here, or to CCP next Monday (Screw the drunken mobs) at 6:30 to hear a lecture by Columbia University’s Dr. Dickson Despommier. Personally I’d like to know if a farmscraper makes economic sense. If so, my suggested location is 2nd and Girard.

These would be great on almost any building over 6-7 stories. My building typically has a breeze almost any time of day due to thermal differences between the surface and the higher floors and when you factor in the wind tunnel effect that tall, closely packed buildings create, there certainly exists the possibility to harness power from the wind that otherwise wasn’t.
That and tax breaks for using alternative energy systems make an idea like this something I would support. And even though traditional wind turbines are enormous, there’s something very pleasing to the eyes about them that allows me to get past their construction material and physical size footprints.
Atlantic City recently put in 5 windmills along the parkway. I first saw them last summer while out boating with my father off of Somers Point. They’re always impressive looking, although nothing like the farms one can see out west.
